What a Baby

People always ask me what the baby is like. Do you want to know?

She's great. She screams to let you know that she is awake, but when you go in there she smiles like you are the rising sun itself brightening her day. She fidgets around in her crib and on her playmat, trying her best to cram her favorite toys and fingers as far into her mouth as possible. Fortunately she is not an expert at the feat and usually just drools over everything. She loves to drool down my shoulder and gnaw on whatever shirt, sleeve, arm, or hand is in proximity to her little mouth. Sometimes she calls out gently while playing and sometimes she makes a persistant whine. It's not bad at first, but the duration of it and the repetition of it certainly drains you. The only remedy seems to be to pick her up, which she seems to like to have done every fifteen minutes or so. Occasionally she likes to lay nicely and let Daddy watch football or play with her, but usually she would prefer to try and grab her toes, try to suck her toes, and try to maintain a sitting position. She wobbles back and forth when sitting, but her head is really steady. This means we can pick her up for very long periods of time, which is a boon and a blessing as the case may be. She loves getting out and watching things, like the leaves falling in the backyard this Wednesday. She really likes to see people and hear them talk. Right about now she seems to know that things are being communicated and she is trying to figure that out. I get a little creeped out sometimes when she stares incessently at my mouth and her eyes get big while I talk, but I know her neurons are trying to form the best pathways to make some sense of it all - and I cannot wait for that to happen. She likes going to places like the mall or big stores. Those places mean the stroller moves for a long time without stopping, there are lots of shiny things to see, and she sometimes passes out when there is a lot of background noise. I think every time she has been to a restaurant so far has resulted in her passing out. She likes to hear music and is particularly fond of us singing to her. Sometimes she monosyllabuls a response too, which is really endearing and motivating. She's got a big smile that is a treasure to behold and she reveals it pretty often. She's sleeping for much longer, many hours in a row now. But when she is awake she enjoys being entertained and generally around people. She can occupy herself, but far prefers being around us or seeing other people. We've remarked more than once that she seems at her best behavior outside of the house and I think that is just because she is so fascinated by everything to behold. I think that she is very observant right about now, not sure if she is figuring anything out yet, but it is really fun to watch her observing life. She's tried to grab for the cats a couple times, but they were of course too swift for her unsteady hands. She likes toys that crinkle and can be chewed and drooled upon.

So yeah, that's about what she's like. I am very happy when I am around her. The only bad times are when she cries and usually that is short-lived after her immediate need is filled. She's been called a happy baby and I would like to believe that is true.
