The Man in the Box
Several years ago I asked my uncle, who happens to be a Roman Catholic priest, if there was an stir about a popular book at that time, one about "Bible Code" - hidden messages buried within the texts of the Bible. My uncle shrugged it off entirely and told me this sort of a thing crops up every so often and never holds weight nor changes popular opinion until it is forgotten and the next thing comes along.
I was reminded of this after the recent James Cameron's project, the Lost Tomb of Jesus, broadcasted on the Discovery channel. According to this, Jesus and his family were entombed together, and two of the tombs belonged to his wife and his child.
In the 1970s a theory arose that the Merovingian lineage in France was descended from the lovechild of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene. The book Holy Blood, Holy Grail and its legacy lived on to spawn the popular novel and movie The Da Vinci Code.
Hitting the Internet to see what other theories about the fate of the historical Jesus exist I found a belief that Jesus moved to India and there is a Tomb of Jesus there. Not to be outdone, a small town claims to host a burial site for Jesus in Japan.
It would seem that these three theories should cancel one another out; the evidence cited by one debunked by the evidence of the others. I wonder how long it will be before the Jesus tomb gets relocated to Africa next. Then another man in another box will compete for the claim to be Jesus Christ.
This isn't really a matter of faith to me, it's the logical examination of the theories. I can not accept the idea of a crucified man escaping attention of Romans in the Israel by using Roman roads to cross Roman lands and into Europe. It also does not make sense that Jesus could have hung around Jerusalem living with his wife and making babies at the same time that his apostles were motivated to travel the land preaching Christianity and converting thousands in and outside of Israel. The key India documentation cited is literally from the 17th century and the Japanese documents are from 1935.
