Patents Online
I have a baseball glove and noticed the leather was branded with a U.S. Patent Number. I thought that was humorous enough to research online.
Turns out the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office actually maintains an online patent number search tool. I easily found the baseball glove patent, filed originally in 1987, which remarked the glove will "retain its shape longer than gloves of conventional construction" and be more "convenient to tighten" among the advantages of the patented design.
There are patent guidelines that include "any new and useful process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter, or any new and useful improvement thereof", but exclude atomic energy and atomic weaponry. Despite the Human Genome Project, there are rules for how to patent DNA sequences among other things. So, the next time you hear about some crazy patents, you should be able to confirm someone patented the "anti-eating face mask", etc.
