Sonya Perks
On Monday I had to ship out several items at the post office. I had Sonya with me so rather than fighting with her about who gets to push the buttons on the postage machine we waited in line for a clerk to help us. It did not take long to wait and the clerk was very nice. She even stopped during the transaction to give Sonya a sticker sheet (she selected the elephant). It was surprisingly easy.
Later that night while accounting for the costs of shipping I discovered I was not charged for enough stamps, we were charged for 5 shipments instead of 6. I recalled the trip and how difficult it was to balance Sonya in one arm and a bundle of packages in my other arm, but I could not believe that I dropped something and no one noticed it either on the way in nor on the way out. I remembered the transaction was interrupted and I feared something was not postmarked. I scoured the Internet for a phone number but all I could get was a 1-800 line that I knew was not for the local post.
The next morning I returned to the same post office with another package to mail. It was almost empty at that time, but there were 3 clerks on hand. I nervously tried explaining to one that I thought I might have lost a package in the parking lot because I was missing a charge for one from the previous day. In the midst of the conversation another clerk called to the clerk I dealt with the day prior and asked if she remembered me. She smiled and said something about Sonya, then shocked me with the declaration that she forgot to charge me for one item and paid for it herself. I asked how much I owed and she shrugged her shoulders, and the clerks smiled and laughed.
I have been going to this post office for years. I have shipped many things and used to frequent the clerks often for help with media mail rates. They do not know my name, still do not, but my daughter goes in with me once and they all remembered her. I have never heard of anyone receiving anything for free from the post office, so I cannot help but chalk it up to Sonya being adorable. Maybe I should take her more places to aid negotiations. She might have a long life full of perks ahead of her, but I am unaccustomed to that so I have to take full advantage of it while she still allows me to tote her around.
