Unusual 7 days
Friday.
I decided to head out to the movies and see some friends I used to work with at the Carolina Theatre. On the drive there, while sitting at a red light at a complete stop, a white truck read-ended me. The cop took 20 minutes to get there, told me there was no damages, and wrote me a ticket for an expired car inspection. I did make it to the theatre in time to see a movie and socialize a bit, which was nice. I drank two Red Oak draft beers to forget the car woes.
Saturday.
We stopped by Lisa's office to pick up a shelving unit they were discarding and talked briefly with her co-worker. I sat in the back seat holding the shelves in place in the trunk through a small hole between the back seats. During nap time someone knocked at the door, but was long gone by the time we made it downstairs. When we got the mail we received an inheritance check from Kansas. Nap time ran late and we slept through the beginning of the Notre Dame football game. We missed the end of the game because we went to Raleigh to babysit for someone from Chicago in town for a wedding, Lisa's friend from high school. The Sheraton also hosted a biker convention so the mix of wedding reception, bikers, and businessmen was odd. Sonya and I brought our swimming suits and enjoyed a dip in the hotel's hot tub. We also ate room service while the 5 month old slept, well, like a baby.
Sunday.
We set out to buy a pumpkin, but the pumpkin patch was closed. Lisa convinced me to take my car in to get it washed and they someone got out the milk stains underneath and below Sonya's carseat. Then Lisa bought and I assembled a plastic kitchen set for Sonya. We inserted batteries and learned the surface can announce items put there. It might be accurate to say that Sonya and I had more fun playing with the large cardboard box. Late that evening I learned that I won my fantasy baseball league. It is the second year in a row and 6 out the last 7 years that I have won, but it never feels any less rewarding.
Monday.
In the mail we received a free drinking fountain for the cats from a cat litter rewards program. As I was putting dishes in the dishwasher I heard Sonya fall down a couple of stairs. When she was more worried about where her rubber ball went than her injuries I knew for sure there was nothing to worry about. Sonya and I took our cat Autumn to the vet, who convinced me to let them do some blood work in addition to the required vaccinations. Turns out the levels they tested for her kidney failure are within the normal range so all is good with her. That evening we went out to eat and enjoyed a meal at Brightleaf Square. Afterwards I returned some items only to learn other items I requested through interlibrary loan were ready for pick-up but no one bothered to call me to let me know.
Tuesday.
Lisa and Sonya inexplicably woke up around 5:30 AM, ate breakfast and did all the morning routine in the dark. Lisa said at daycare Sonya immediately fell asleep on the couch. I also had an early day as I had my car inspection renewed at the Honda dealer at 7:30 AM - no problems reported thankfully, but the paperwork says I need to follow up with the DMV to make sure I receive proper credit for the inspection. Later in the day I deposited a check at the credit union. I also requested a deposit for an amount far less than the check. This confused the clerk who 1) deposited the check 2) withdrew the entire amount of the check 3) redeposited the entire cash amount 4) withdrew the amount I requested. So by the books I made 2 deposits and 2 withdrawals in 2 minutes. I called up Lisa and brought her lunch at work, which was the first time I did that at her new job.
Wednesday.
Our back-up daycare option failed so I took a vacation day with Sonya. Lisa had to oversee the entire relocation of her office from one building to another in downtown Durham. Sonya and I got pizza for a late lunch. That night we picked out our pumpkins and celebrated our selections with ice cream and coffee at McDonalds.
Thursday
At work I ended up receiving, free of charge, several South Beach diet prepared meals and snack bars. There were signs up referencing Working Mother magazine, but I am not sure who supplied the food or why. I also never learned what the diet was and how the food differs from any other. It was, however, free.
