School Days
On the walk through campus to attend orientation weekend I thought about how long it had been since I attended an undergraduate class. Among other things, that was before our country was at war (which speaks to the length of our armed conflicts). It was a time when there were more IT jobs than people with the skills for those jobs - just prior to the shift of offshore operations to other nations. The Internet did exist, but it was hardly as robust and streaming videos were still too slow to wait for them to download. Businesses all wanted to have an online presence but the value of it was unknown. Investors poured money into Amazon.com without it turning a profit on the hopes it would become a profitable venture. That worked, but many other dot com era ventures failed - largely because the projections were subjective and without a history to provide accurate measures.
So the world has changed much, but so have we. I never would have said that I would wait this long to go back to school, nor that I would be living in North Carolina when I did it. I like to say, "life happens". I have worked in a few different industries in different roles and over several different cities. Probably the only thing I would have guessed right when I was coming out of Notre Dame was that I would marry Lisa and have a family.
It was a nice weekend. Tiring but better than I expected it would be. I am happy and looking forward to getting back into the routines and habits that come with school work.
