Yanks vs. Twins

From 2003 to 2010 the Minnesota Twins advanced to the playoffs 5 times. Here are the results:
  • 2010: lost to Yankees (0-3)
  • 2009: lost to Yankees (0-3)
  • 2006: lost to Athletics (0-3)
  • 2004: lost to Yankees (1-3)
  • 2003: lost to Yankees (1-3)
This is typically the point in the conversation where someone gets red in the face about salaries, because the Yankees pay nearly twice anyone else to field a team of stellar players. That is a fact.

Check out the 2010 attendance figures, the Twins ranked 6th in MLB (and 3rd in the American League).
Check out the 2010 salary figures, the Twins ranked 12th in MLB (and 7th in the American League).
These two data sets suggest the Twins could spend more on payroll.

Check out the Nielson ratings media markets. Notice how closely market ranking aligns with MLB salaries.

I once laughed at a coworker who suggested MLB relocate one of the teams from Florida to Raleigh but looking at the media market there is something there. We are in a growing market larger than markets already hosting teams: Baltimore, San Diego, Kansas City, Cincinnati, and Milwaukee. However, US Census data puts the Raleigh population about 405k and the Durham population around  229k for a total (not counting surrounding areas) about 634k. Baltimore has a few thousand more, but Seattle, Milwaukee, Washington DC, Atlanta, Kansas City, Cleveland, Oakland, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Tampa, Anaheim, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh have smaller numbers. Much interpretation comes down to where lines get drawn, Atlanta has sprawling suburbs so the estimate likely understates the local population attending games. However, the numbers suggest Raleigh-Durham could sustain a MLB franchise on par with Baltimore, Kansas City, Cincinnati, and Milwaukee... which is actually not very good at all... Baltimore last made the playoffs in 1997, Kansas City in 1985, Milwaukee made the playoffs in 2008 but not since 1982 prior 2008, and Cincinnati made the playoffs this year but not since 1995 prior to 2010. Combined that is 4 teams made the playoffs 4 times since 1995 - performance to avoid not repeat.
