The Very Hopeless Camel

It was a special treat to see our daughter perform tonight in a school musical titled, The Very Hopeless Camel. The story is about a forlorn camel who stumbles across Jesus in Bethlehem and then becomes the happiest camel. Her class was the youngest group and they stayed on stage the whole time and sang the chorus "wriggle your hump." She wriggled and jumped with enthusiasm and surprised me with her confidence in front of a packed house.

Perhaps the funniest part of the evening was searching for our daughter. There she was front and center, but it was difficult to spot her with her hair pulled back in a cap. I scanned the shoes to locate her and laughed with my Mom when we discovered she was in the front row, practically looking right at us the whole time. We never caught her eye though, and most of the kids on stage by the end of the show were trying their hardest to find mom and dad.

Little brother was an agreeable audience member and stared wide-eyed throughout the show. He picked at my hand as he usually does when he is tired and I didn’t hear a word out of him. He’s a trooper.

When we got home she refused to take her costume off and ate lots of random snacks, ice cream, pineapple, then barbecue. If she weren’t so tired, she would still be asking me for barbecue.

I will also remember tonight for what the principal said at closing. "Merry Christmas," she said warmly. "And isn't it nice to have a place where we can still say that."
