Women in baseball
The first woman to get paid to play professional baseball was Lizzie Arlington in the 19th century. She was apparently a spectacle attraction and not a terrific talent on the field.
In the 1920s, Lizzie Murphy played in exhibition games with both the AL and NL, "becoming the first person--of any gender--to play for All-Star teams in each league."
In 1988, Julie Croteau became the first woman to play NCAA baseball, as a walk on player at Saint Mary's College of Maryland (Division III).
So what are the chances my daughter takes it a step further and plays for the Yankees? In 1952, MLB banned women to stop a planned publicity stunt involving Eleanor Engle. So my daughter has a lot of work cut out for her. First, she has to reverse a 60 year old official ban. Second, she has to learn how to play baseball.
