BOO Bud Selig

Bud Selig announced that he endorses Congress's harsher steroids legislation for professional sports, including baseball. NO KIDDING? This really takes the onus away from his role in dealing with this and other issues, in which he demonstrably lacks any aptitude.

Bud Selig has acted as MLB reigning commissioner since 1992. The year before he took power steroids were formally banned from the game. MLB did not begin testing its players for steroids until 2003. Still today the penalty carries as much weight as a baseball brawl - 10 games for first time offenders.

In 1992 MLB learned of federal investiagtion in steroids distributors implicating usage by 1988 MVP Jose Canseco. In 1993 reports about usage by Lenny Dykstra filtered through the media. In 1998 a reporter had the courage to ask Mark McGwire what those Andro pills were in his locker. Ken Caminiti admitted in 2002 that he used steroids in his MVP 1996 season. In 2004 newspapers leaked testimony from the BALCO investigations implicating knowing and claiming accidental steroids use by Jason Giambi, Gary Sheffield, Barry Bonds, and others. In 2005 Jose Canseco writes a book admitting rampant steroids use in his Hall of Fame calibre career as well as by many other stars of his era.

All of this occurred under the watch of Bud Selig. Of all this he is implicitly guilty of complete failure as a Commissioner. The owners are implicitly guilty for allowing this non-leader to persist in a role where he refuses to make substantative desicions at a time where baseball needed intervention by governing power. And now Congress offers to intercede and supply that guidance. Yet Selig makes overtures to point to the world his acceptance of their judgment. This man who lacks integrity and fortitude, demonstrating again to the world his inability to lead or enact change. This man is the travesty that aided and abetted the troubles of baseball over the course of his "rule" and history should remember his doublespeak and inaction as a reminder to not allow such incompetent officials to come to power.
