Today, the US powers that be decided to allow Cuba into the World Baseball Classic. I felt elated upon hearing this and then I realized I really wanted this promotional tournament to really capture the attention of the globe. Without Cuba, Puerto Rico threatened to boycott and refuse to host games scheduled there, the IBAF threatened to revoke sanctioning, and the Olympic champions could have not been represented. That was all unecessary. The obstacles were strictly bureaucratic and thankfully they are overcome and the tournament retains a degree of legitimacy it stood to lose. So, here's to the USA for not getting this one wrong and here's to baseball for removing politics from sports, and here's to baseball fans for the chance to see what international play with among the best talent available.
