Coincidence?

Sunday afternoon I decided to finally tackle the ancient grass pile behind the shed. I wanted to shovel as much of the remains of yesterday's lawns into our yard waste bin. It had mostly composted, and likely held great nutrients, but I did not want to deal with whatever weeds, cockroaches, mice, or snakes had taken root in the pile - not any longer that is. Our neighbor believes our predecessors here placed all their grass clippings back there, but if so I am amazed at how little there is to be found and at how rapidly decomposed it was. My theory is that the people who renovated the house did a bang up on the yard work in a day or two and dumped their refuse behind the shed.

The project was mostly digging up vines and little odd roots with my shovel, keeping a keen eye out for the large snake another neighbor claimed to have seen by my shed. I got invigorated and filled my yard waste bin to the very brim. Proud of myself I went to drag the bin up the yard to the house. It was heavy. It sank into the mud. I felt very stupid.

So, I pulled out a couple of leaf bags and began shovelling again. Taking piles of grass and mush from out of one bin and depositing it into a giant brown bag. These are the moments I hope my neighbors are not looking. It took a little while, but I got the job done - albeit by using a couple of bags I had intended to save for the Spring.

That night I took out Sonya's block set and decided she was ready to try playing with it. We soon developed a rather amusing routine. She would empty the bin and I would replace the blocks into the bin. Sonya was not at all interested in replacing the blocks and lost interest if there were none to remove from the bin. As I sat there, in a cycle of motion with my daughter, I realized how similar this little project operated to my larger yard project.

Coincidence? These are the moments that I wonder how the divine perceive our little works and silly actions. Well, just like how I smiled and enjoyed my daughter thoroughly, I believe God looks down with the same pride and entertainment.
