Library Comics
I remember receiving a Superman comic when I was a young boy, I was extremely excited to read it. However, the monster portrayed on the cover never made an appearance, there were no fights worth reading, and instead the comic ended with a cliffhanger at the point of potentially confronting the monster on the cover. I was so disappointed I never read another comic. Even after the Dark Night series, after Spawn became a movie, after Todd McFarlane did music videos, I never opened another comic.
However, I recently discovered the library has a collection. Of course these are bound together under the genre title of "graphic novel" - but I know better; these are comics. This opens up access for story arcs across the collection of comics, no disappointing cliffhangers, and the price is right. I really appreciate the creativity of comics and the ability to explore imaginative ideas. They tell interesting stories with pictures fun to look at. As I write this I also realize the ability to read a story very quickly suits my life now as a father with little time to read. I was a little surprised the library stocked them, but since I would never purchase one I am gladly using the interlibrary loan system available in our county to explore their collections.
I am enjoying the works of Neil Gaiman, most especially his Sandman series. After I finish that I intend to check out the Watchmen series.
