Birthday Party

The truth...
Lisa threw threw me a surprise birthday party Thursday night. It was great. I was happy to see some friends, enjoyed watching the kids, and glad to have a wife that cares so much.

The whole truth...
Mid-way through the week Sonya began telling us she needed to go to the party, the birthday party. She knew my birthday was coming up because Lisa and I talked about going out that evening. The morning of my birthday the two if the them woke me up singing Happy Birthday, which has been the highlight of the year for me. When I picked Sonya up from daycare she came running up to me yelling about a "card birthday". The daycare attendant said Sonya talked about my birthday party all day so she helped her make me a card.

I actually picked her up a little earlier than usual that day, eager to get home. On the ride home I called Lisa to let her know we'd be home early and left her a fun message; we sang Happy Birthday on the voicemail. When we got home the neighbor called to ask for a ride to the pharmacy. I recalled the story he told me of when he got another neighbor out of the house for a surprise his wife pulled. I called Lisa and the conversation was awkward. I made it a point to tell her about the neighbor and her voice hit another octave higher than usual, without any follow-up question as to why the neighbor even needed a ride. However, the neighbor really played up his injury so I agreed to drive him and our daughters around town. I even told him that's what I always wanted for my birthday; a neighbor with kidney stones.

The first grocery store he went inside to get medicine. Sonya decided that she wanted to go inside and that's when we realized there was no pharmacy there. The neighbor said it was the wrong grocery store so we went down the road. This time the girls stayed in the car with me. I told them it was my birthday and they sang Happy Birthday to me a few times. The neighbor's daughter told me she was not supposed to mention my birthday. I asked why. She said because her father promised her a piece of candy if she did not mention my birthday. When the neighbor came out of the grocery story his daughter blurted out, "Daddy, he knows it's his birthday." I knew Lisa was trying to sneak a large present into the house without me seeing it, but I did not challenge the neighbor's ruse.

We pulled up to the house and I saw three extra cars around the house. I recognized two of them. The neighbor laughed. Inside were three couples we've been to the beach with the past few years (not this year) and a table full of barbecue food. I was surprised to see them all, especially as one couple lives in Alabama. They were in town for a family friend's high school graduation so Lisa decided to parlay that into a little surprise party. It was great to see everyone again, nice to be around so many parents and watch the kids play together, and the food was good. Dessert was interesting; the chocolate cake from a highly regarded local bakery was more like chocolate covered bread than icing laden birthday cake. No complainst - I had not had a real birthday party since I was twelve years old. It was a really nice time and I was appreciative that Lisa made such an effort.
