5 Rings

After the 2009 World Series, much was made of the "core four" Yankees who won their fifth World Series rings together. This made me wonder if the Baseball Writers would factor that success into Hall of Fame votes for Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, and Mariano Rivera. Jeter and Rivera already possess Hall of Fame calibre statistics, but Posada does not and Pettitte's career statistics are not as impressive.

Most baseball fans know Yogi Berra owns the most World Series rings and the players with the most World Series rings are dominated by Yankees. There are 14 players who played on more World Series champion teams than the "cour four" modern Yankees. Berra tops the list with 10, but Joe DiMaggio has 9 and missed three seasons in the peak of his career when he enlisted in the Air Force during World War II. Other Yankees Hall of Famers on top of this list include Babe Ruth, Bill Dickey, Whitey Ford, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Phil Rizzuto, and Red Ruffing. However, there are also 5 players with more than 5 championships who did not make the Hall of Fame; Hank Bauer, Frankie Crosetti, Johnny Murphy, Vic Raschi, and Allie Reynolds. They had fine careers, but were not voted into the Hall of Fame.

Bauer was an All Star three times, Posada five times. Both received MVP votes twice and never won that award. Both have a .277 career batting average over 1500 games. Posada has an edge in HR; 243 to 164. On the other hand Bauer was known as a gritty former Marine with sharp focus whereas Posada is prone to make poor decisions (especially on the basepaths). Both were big parts of the teams they played for and very much contributed towards their championships. Bauer's 7 rings did not get him into the Hall and neither will Posada's 5 rings.

Allie Reynolds was an All Star five times, Pettitte twice. Reynolds received MVP votes 5 times and Pettitte received MVP votes twice, but neither won that award. Pettitte received Cy Young votes five times, Reynolds none, and neither won that award. Reynolds has 182 Wins, Pettitte has 229. Pettitte also has the edge in strikeouts, 2150 to 1423. On the other hand Reynolds has a career ERA of 3.30 to 3.91 for Pettitte. Both were vital components of their pitching staffs and both are known for post-season successes. Reynolds' 6 rings did not get him into the Hall and neither will Pettitte's 5 rings.

The list of players who played on World Series championship teams also captures the number of times a player was on the team during the regular season but did not play in the World Series. Art Jorgens  played during the season for 5 World Series champions but never once played in the World Series. He's not making the Hall of Fame either; 738 AB over 11 seasons, 4 career HR, .238 batting average.
