Spider Girl

My girl really likes spiders. It's not the sort of thing we expected nor encouraged. It's something no one expects from a girl that adores pink dresses and playing with a baby doll. How much does she like spiders? She cried once when there were no books at the library with spider pictures. When looking at pictures she finds the ones with mother spiders with hundreds of babies crawling on her back cute and says "aw, look at the babies."

The first question most people wonder about this spider fascination is where did it originate. We strongly believe it was from our house, in early October. We had a large spider make a web covering most of the bay window in our kitchen (on the exterior). It was interesting to look at and we allowed it to thrive there because it ate many insects that we found less desirable. In the evening before bed time the three of us would check out what the spider had caught; the biggest catch was a large dragonfly. As the weather cooled with the approach of winter the spider disappeared. We told Sonya it left to find a warmer home. She missed it.

I checked out two childrens books from the library which were nothing but spider pictures and facts. She loved them. We read them at bed time. I had to get new books from the library with different pictures. Around Halloween our neighbors, who knew her unusual interest in spiders, gave her rubber spiders they purchased while making Halloween decorations. She slept with them in the bed and still has them on her nightstand. She's taken library books in to pre-school for her show and tell item twice so far. This weekend a she spied a tiny spider on the ceiling and made me put her on my shoulders so she could get a better look at it. Her excitement at that surprised us.

At this rate we may end up with a 2010 Halloween costume of Spider-Girl.
