That was the message we beamed at a star cluster in 1974 in a one-time three minute long signal. Ultimately, this was a "symbolic event" as "the globular cluster at which the signal was aimed won't be there when the message arrives". The so-called Arecibo message was an interesting stunt to display the power of the machinery built. That seems a poor excuse for the ugly coding that at best assumes alien life understands binary code in the same way as 1970s era computer programmers. I doubt human beings, only 40 years later would decode the message without the notes from the senders. The ridiculous binary string is just as unimpressive when constructed to line up "correctly":
